David and Ben

Singer-Songwriter at the Raglan Summer Arts School 2021 is with David Parker and Ben Collier.

David has been writing and playing music since he was 13 and had a brush with fame in the early 90’s recording a Number One record Tears on My Pillow – but more recently is known for performing with Ben in The Nukes, who have written and recorded 3 albums of original music and travel and play often all around Australasia. Ben used to play drums in Goldenhorse.

David is an experienced primary school teacher who has taught music all over NZ. His approach is non-threatening, open and supportive.

The workshop will cover the fundamentals of songwriting – looking in detail at the tools the songwriter needs to create with: from the basics of music theory to lyric writing, but also and maybe most importantly the creative attidude and preparation one needs to write.

Particpants will be given the means to create their own songs. Masterpiece or not, songwriting is a wonderful medium of self -expression. So find your inner voice and get creative.

Some experience on an instrument will be of definite use. One that is accompanying (guitar/ piano/ ukulele) would be an advantage but not essential.

A willingness to try stretching your boundaries and challenge yourself – even if just a little – will be helpful.

The structure of the stream will be 3 days of learning and workshopping, culminating in a intimate performance experience (for each other and a limited number of invited guests) on the last day, trialling the songs in a performance situation. David will give plenty of support.

Students need to bring: A couple of pens, pencils, a large sketch-art pad for writing-brainstorming etc. Bring large cushions for relaxing (or working) on the floor.

An instrument if you play one. Comfortable clothes.

A smart-phone or digital recording device.
